Disabling DCOM

Blaster worm infected systems may reboot every few minutes. This will stop the infected users from downloading security patches and antivirus software. You can disable DCOM temporarily to download patches and antivirus software.

  • In case of Windows XP or Sever 2003, Start->Run->dcomcnfg.exe will load the configuration window. Open "component services", then the "computers" folder. Right click on "My Computer" icon and choose "properties" tab. Uncheck "Enable distributed COM on this computer" in the "default properties" tab and restart the system. 
  • In case of NT or 2000, Start->Run->dcomcnfg.exe will load the DCOM configuration window. Uncheck "Enable distributed COM on this computer" in the "default properties" tab and restart the system. 

After installing the security patches and antivirus software, you can enable the distributed COM.
