BAGLE WORM SPREADS IN THE WILD

Virus details :

                     Bagle is a mass mailing worm, uses  e-mail addresses collected from .htm, .wab, .html, .txt files to distribute infected messages. Bagle worm arrives as an e-mail attachment. The infected attachment name is randomly chosen by the worm.

                     When the worm file is executed, it executes standard Windows calculator program ( calc.exe ) and copies itself to Windows system folder as "bbeagle.exe" in the background.

                     W32.Beagle.A@mm modifies registry run section to load automatically on the next startup. The registry modification is given below.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
"d3dupdate.exe"= C:\%SYSTEM%\bbeagle.exe 

[ By default, %SYSTEM% will be C:\Windows\System in case of Windows 95/98/ME, C:\Winnt\System32 in case of Windows NT/2000 and C:\Windows\System32 in case of Windows XP ]

The worm also creates following additional keys

HKCU\Software\Windows98\uid
HKCU\Software\Windows98\frun 

                     Bagle worm uses its own SMTP engine to send infected messages. The worm also tries to access a PHP script from a static web site list given in the worm. At the time of writing, the script is not available for download. Bagle worm is detected on 18th January 2004.
